Landmark and World Landmark Books are accurate, in-depth stories for young people in the 9-15 year old range. These living histories were written by award-winning authors or by men and women who experienced the events first hand. Written during the 1950's and 1960's and illustrated either with two-color drawings or clear photographs, the books are informative, enjoyable, and well worth reading and collecting. The Story of the U. S. Coast Guard. Landmark Book #97. From the founding in 1790 to the present time, the United States Coast Guard has played a significant part in shaping our nation's history. When it was originally established as a small coastal patrol of ten cutters, its chief duties were to collect revenue and prevent smugglers from landing contraband cargo. In no time at all, however, the members of the Revenue Marine- as the Coast Guard was then called- found themselves fighting the French and British navies, ridding the seas of pirates and quelling Indian disturbances in Florida. This is a Less-Common Landmark Book from the series.
