First edition, 12mo, pp. [6], 214; ex-Forbes Library, Northampton, Mass., with their stamp at the bottom of the title page and a lending slip and pocket on the rear free endpaper and pastedown; spine sunned, else a very good copy in original gilt-stamped green cloth, t.e.g. This copy warmly inscribed "My dear Mr. Canning, the cordial friendship and best wishes of yours truly, Geo. W. Cable, Tarryawhile, June '99" followed by four lines of verse ("To one than whose calling none fairer / Had been since fair living began / A reader, a writer, a bearer / Of Nature's love-letters to man") followed by "Mr. E. J. Canning, Head gardener, Smith College." BAL 2365; Wright III, 872.
