Though there have been formal tests of general proficiency around for many years - see Weir (2003a) for an interesting and informative historical perspective on the Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) since its introduction in 1913 - interest in language for specific purposes has a far shorter history, emerging, according to Swales (1984:11) with Barber's (1962) Some Measurable Characteristics of Modern Scientific Prose.
