Brazen broke up on a submerged rock below the cliffs of Newhaven in 1800. A brave attempt top rescue ended in disaster when all 17 crew memnets of the Rye lifeboat Mary Stanford were drowned going to the aid of the steamer Alice. On the lighter side, the wreck of the Indiana in 1901 enabled beachcombers all along the Worthing coast to harvest tens of thousands of oranges and lemons for marmalade as they washed ashore from her cargo. The author brings these and many more shipwrecks vividly to life, recalling the courage and heroism of seaman and passengers, and the slefless bravery of those who went to their rescue.
