Hastings at War, 1939-1945

By Nathan Dylan Goodwin

Great Britain: Phillimore. Fine/Near Fine. 2005. First Edition. Cloth. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall 1860773281 Hadrback Hardback. First Edition. Hastings was often bombed during the Second World War. John Bristow, describing a raid on 23 May 1943 says 'There was a god-almighty explosion and we went into the passage by The Havelock pub and we dived onto the ground and lay there looking our before a bomb hit what was the old Royal Oak Hotel. Along by Woolworthg's there was a car going by and it was sent up into the air by the bomb and over and over. While we lay there, there was another terrific explosion down the side of Plummer's and I'll never forget seeing a huge lump of yellow colourered masonry coming over and lond on the tram wires....' This experience is one of more than forty people's memories, cleverly incorporated by the author into his vivid account of what Hastings endured when it was a 'front-line' town - and of its great defiance and fortitude in the face of the enemy. He tells how Hastings folk coped with the daily wartime hardships of blackout, rationing, the billeting of evacuees; the excavation of the town, constant fear of invastion, and the relentless bombing raids, day and night, leaving in their wake a trail of death, destruction and the apprehension of where and when the next attack would come. The author was born and bred in the town and has been able to draw upon the recollection and records of a wide range of Hastings people who lived through the wartime years. His book is full of their personal spirited and sometimes frightening memories. He has also spent several years researching a great variety of documentary sources and collection suitable illustrations. His narrative is both comprehensive and compelling....a story never told before but well worth telling. Illustrated. 130 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.) .

Keston Parish Album. More Pictures From the Past

By Edward Williams

Great Britain: Privately Printed. Fine/Near Fine. 1988. First Edition. Cloth. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall Quarto Hardcover Hardcover. First Edition. Keston Parish. More Pictures From the Past. Ted Williams, as his readers must now be aware, is a man who has a very high regard for the locality in which he has spent his life and for the more peaceful times just gone. The response to Ted's first Album was very complimentary and so much new material found its way into his hands that he had no alternative but to compile a sequel. Inevitably all life is transient and Ted has been saddened by the loss of several friends as well as redevelopment of noted landmarks. However, it is an acknowledged fact that although established architecture adds to the general ambience of a place it is the people who create the continuity of village life. He would hope that in reading this sequel older villagers can be proud of the past in which they have played an integral role and that new residents will acquire a sense of belonging to a community wit a history. He would particularly like to think that they will want to preserve the area, with all its attractive features, for the future. Illustrated throughout. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Academic and Scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Educational Reference Literature.) .

Romney Marsh at War

By Edward Carpenter

Great Britain: Sutton. Near Fine. 2000. Reprint. Soft Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo 0750922354 Paperback Paperback. now very rare in this condition Romney Marsh at War. In this fasvcinating and evocative book, the author recalls the extraordinary effect the Second World War on the lives of the inhabitants of Romney Marsh. After the British defeat at Dunkirk and the fall of France, Hitler's army and air force were just 20 miles away from Romney Marsh across the English Channel. The Marsh was on the front line, and for five difficult years the local people faced the direct threat of German invasion and air attack. The author records their role in the war and vividly brings back to life the everyday realities and intense atmosphere of those troubled times. The book describes the ancious intial efforts made to organize the defence of the Marsh in the early days of the confrontation, particularly at Lydd which was - and still is - a garrison town. It goes on to record the most significant events of the time - the capture of German spies, plans for the evacuation of children and sheep, the Battle of Britain, advanced landing grounds, flying bombs, PLUTO, and the eventual victory celebrations. These episodes are recollected by the participants who found themselves at the centre of the civil defence operations of southern Britain. In particular, the author quotes the Home Guardsmen and the Land Girls, the lifeboatmen and the police, members of the 'Secret Army', and the ordinary working inhabitants of the Marsh who played such an important part in the wartime economy.
