Hypnotism, like magic, is somewhat of a mystery which has captured the fearing imagination of the common man. However, for a good portion of this century, hypnotism has been seriously studied, carefully explored, and successfully used by the psychologically-oriented medical community. Precisely what hypnotism is, and what are its boundaries, has not been conclusively defined. While many theories abound, nothing as yet put forth has been comprehensive enough to account for all the general aspects and particular phenomena of the hypnotic experience. B.J. Hartman does not presume to advance a comprehensive theory. But in its absence, he offers A System of Hypnotherapy, his own working system, which has grown out of fourteen years of personal experience with many types[ of clients, a system which integrates and synthesizes the various approaches to hypnotherapy currently discussed and practiced.
A System of Hypnotherapy is, however, a comprehensive work, in that it cogently reviews the plethora of theories on hypnosis, from the physiological ones which view hypnotism as an altered condition of the brain, to the psychological ones which view it as a unique interpersonal relationship. Yet it goes far beyond that, becoming and instructional guide for those who wish to explore and use hypnotherapy, as well as a handbook on an abundance of techniques, opinions, and alternative approaches. Moving from the theoretical, Hartman presents techniques to induce the hypnotic state for a wide variety of personalities and clinical situations. His careful cataloguing of the aspects of hypnosis includes its stages, the methods of recognizing its depth, types of hypnotherapy, and phases of hypnotherapy.
