About This Item

Edinburgh: Andrew Elliot, 1864. First edition. Cloth. Fair. 7" by 5.5". Unamed. A scarce first edition of Lucy Ellen Guernsey's Tabby's Travels. First edition. Scarce. With a small nameplate on the front pastedown. Very rarely seen and then often in terrible condition. Here it is better than usual. Lucy Ellen Guernsey (1826-1899) was an American author of juvenile novels. She wrote more than 60 books, most of them published by the American Sunday School Union. She was active in the Episcopal church and from the years 1888-1899 edited Parish Visitor, a religious journal distributed in prisons, homes and hospitals. In a full cloth binding. Externally, sound. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Light marks to the front and rear boards. There is an ink inscription on the front endpaper. Front hinge is strained, held only by chords, and may detach in the post despite due care given. Internally, binding is loosening with several pages detached but present. Pages are generally clean with the occasional handling mark or spot. There is a 2cm closed tear to the bottom of page 17 and a 1.5cm closed tear to the "Jack Webster" plate. Fair
