About This Item

London: Printed for the Author...by G. Smith, 1742. [6],14,[74];[152]pp. With a list of subscribers and an errata slip. Contemporary gilt-tooled calf, gilt supralibros of the La Rochefoucauld family to both boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, all edges red. Rubbed and a trifle marked. Marbled endpapers, recent book-label of Erwin Tomash to FEP, ink-stamp of the Château de La Roche-Guyon to title page, inked inscription of the author to final page of preface. The first edition of land surveyor and mathematics tutor William Gardiner's (1710- c.1769) highly regarded, and remarkably accurate tables of logarithms. Although they contained some errors, they were used as the basis for many subsequent publications in the field - most notably those of Francois Callet (Paris, 1795). Gardiner himself discovered several errors and offered to correct them by hand should owners wish to send their copies to him. Additionally, he offered a reward of a quite staggering £50 for the discovery of further mistakes. From the recently dispersed library of Erwin Tomash (1921-2012), American engineer recognised for his early pioneering work with computer equipment peripherals. His library consisted of over 3,000 books and manuscripts relevant to the history of computation, from medieval and renaissance works on arithmetic, finger-reckoning and the abacus, to the birth in the twentieth century of theoretical and practical computer science under Alan Turing. ESTC T102269, Tomash . First edition. Quarto.

Terms of Sale

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
