During 1971, the Chinese dramatically responded to several steps the United States had takes in 1969 and 1970 to permit trade with, and travel to, China, In April 1971, two decades of Sino-American hostility began to dissipate when members of the U.S. Table Tennis Association visited China. It was followed by touring groups of U.S. Scientists, scholars, and journalists, and in July, President Nixon accepted Premier Chon En-lai's invitation to visit Peking before May, 1972.
