About This Item
New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1944. Hardcover. Illustrations by Fletcher Martin. Introduction by Oscar Lewis. Small 4to. Brown cloth with gilt lettering and decoration, gilt paper over boards clamshell case. xii, 223pp. Top edge gilt. Full-page and smaller partly-color illustrations. Fine/very good. Quite mild clamshell case wear. Sharp, tight copy of this LEC production, with colophon at rear noting a limitation of 1200 numbered copies (this #491) boldly signed in brown ink by illustrator Martin -- smaller than their usual 1500 limitation. Fine selection of Harte's best work, starting of course with "The Luck of Roaring Camp" and "The Outcasts of Poker Flat." The deeply-embossed "gold nugget" graphic on the front board is delightful. Front pastedown bears the custom bookplate of Edward Howrey (1903-96), chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (1953-55) and founder of noted Washington law firm Howrey & Simon. NEWMAN 160.
