About This Item

New York: Simon & Schuster, 2005. Hardcover. Small 4to. Black cloth spine with gilt lettering and brown paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. xix, 916pp. Illustrations, map, pictorial endpapers. Fine/near fine. A tight and attractive first edition of the film-inspiring Pulitzer Prize winner -- with choice film-related autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a fine heavy stock 5" X 3" card signed boldly in full in black ballpoint by actor Jackie Earle Haley (born 1961), who portrays Confederate vice president Alexander H. Stephens in the popular 2012 film "Lincoln." Tipped to the facing blank leaf is a full-page steel-engraved half-length portrait of Stephens in 3-piece suit and tie, a leaf from the 1866 second volume of J.T. Headley's popular survey "The Great Rebellion: A History of the Civil War in the United States." Very good, with the faintest of age toning and touch of foxing. Laid in is the ideal bookmark: Haley's original transmittal envelope.

Synopsis

Winner of the Lincoln Prize This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history.
