About This Item

London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1926. First trade edition. Original black cloth with gilt to spine and front board. Top edge stained yellow. A Near Fine book with a bit of foxing to the fore-edge of the closed text block and to the preliminaries. In a VG+ jacket with amateur tape repairs to the verse of the jacket, some chipping to spine ends and along top of panels, and a bit of staining to the front panel. Twenty mounted color plates (including frontispiece) and twenty-five drawings in black and white.

The Tempest is among Gettings' survey of Rackham's Best Book Illustrations. Here, Rackham brings to life the otherworldly kingdom of Sycorax and Caliban, usurped and governed by the displaced duke Prospero and his empathic daughter Miranda. Among Shakespeare's most complex late plays, here vividly illustrated.

Latimore and Haskell 61-62. Riall 161. Hudson 171. Gettings 151, 153 and 180.
