About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1902. Hardcover. Very good. A Very Good copy of the first American edition, first printing (rubbing to the spine ends and board corners, volume slightly askew, prior seller's price and short note to the front free endpaper). Writing under the pen name "Marie Corelli, Mary Mackay enjoyed great success as a writer and, prior to World War I, sales of her novels exceeded the combined sales of her now better-known contemporaries, including Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling. She also was a favorite writer of Winston-Churchill, Randolph Churchill, and Britain's Royal Family. Set a the turn to the Twentieth Century, "Temporal Power" depicts the machinations and troubles concerning the Royal family and the politicians in power in a fictional England. At that time, sales of her novels averaged 175,000 copies, and Temporal Power achieved a first day record of 120,000. It also provided the basis for a 1916 movie directed by G.B. Samuelson. A Very Good copy.
