Published by James R. Osgood McIlvane & Co., London: 1891. 3 vols. This is the very rare First edition First Issue of this classic novel by Thomas Hardy, with Chapter XXXV printed mistakenly as XXV on page 199, volume II. This error was corrected for the second issue and so is only present in the first issue, making this set of books just one of 1000 copies and all the rarer and more special. Bound in a contemporary binding of red half calf by Mudie, and housed in a modern red slipcase, these books are in lovely condition. the books are lacking the initial blank page in volume II and the final blanks in volumes II and III, and there is a neat ink inscription to the front free endpapers of each volume reading 'J. E. Ferguson'. There is gold gilt lettering and detailing to the spines with black roan labels and the initials J. E. F. at the foot os the spine. There is some minor rubbing and fading to the spines, especially the edges, but otherwise the bindings are nicely preserved and in lovely condition. There is only a little age spotting to the pages inside but apart form this the pages are remarkably clean, bright and free from damage. In all, the books are in Very Good+ to Near FIne condition. Overall, this is an exceptional and rare set of First edition, first printing copies of this classic piece of literature and would be an important addition to any collection, not to mention a great investment. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you would like any further information regarding these special volumes.

Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process.
