About This Item

London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1924]. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 7.5" by 4.5". Not Stated. An uncommon first edition of this work of detective fiction featuring Bulldog Drummond, in the origina, unclipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's red cloth binding, with the original, very scarce, unclipped dust wrapper. This is a first edition of the work, dated using Jisc from copies of the work held at Sheffield Hallam University Library. This work was written by Herman Cyril McNeile, a British soldier and author who often drew on his personal experiences in the trenches during the First World War. McNeile is most remembered for his Bulldog Drummond series, writing this collection under the pseudonym Sapper. This series features Hugh 'Bulldog' Drummond, a veteran from the First World War who tires of his mundane life and becomes an adventure-seeking detective. The character has since appeared in novels, short stories, in plays, films, on television and in graphic novels. This particular work is the third novel in the Bulldog Drummond series, following the events after Professor Goodman's suspicious death. Drummond untangles a sinister plot of greed and murder, with a dangerous face-off with his archenemy in a thrilling motorboat chase. With a booksellers label of Gouldens, Canterbury, to the front paste down. In the original red cloth binding with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, lovely, with light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the occasional, small mark to boards. Light offsetting and the odd mark to endpapers. Goulden's bookseller label to the front paste down. Dust wrapper is generally smart, with chipping and the odd tear to the extremities, moreso to the head of the spine. Tear to the front of the wrap, with tape repairs to the rear and to the spine. Sunning to the spine of the wrap and slight discolouration, with the odd mark. One or two spots to the reverse of the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with the occasional spot, mainly to the first and last pages. Very Good Indeed
