Alfred A. Knoph. New York. 1991. Winner of the 1992 Pulitzer Prize in fiction. Quarter-bound in black with oatmeal colored boards with author's signature on front and lettering on spine in gold. Unclipped jacket ($23.00) is damp stained on inside of spine bottom and top with minor evidence of defect on book spine. Spine sun faded as is typical for the book. Shelf wear and small chips on top of spine. In some respect this is the current state of agriculture in America; past generations of Americans lived and worked on a farm. Times change and land passes to the next generation. Times change and the process becomes complicated as the next generation no longer sees their future being involved with agriculture. Like it or not, everyone in America is involved in what happens as land passes to another generation. Being an Iowa bookseller I can say firsthand the process can dismember family members. this book will tell you why and how it happens.
Synopsis
A Thousand Acres is a 1991 novel by American author Jane Smiley. It won the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was adapted to a 1997 film of the same name. The novel is a contemporary deconstruction of Shakespeare's King Lear and is set on a thousand acre (4 km²) farm in Iowa that is owned by a family of a father and his three daughters. It is told through the point of view of the oldest daughter, Ginny.
