About This Item
New York: Coward-McCann, Inc, N.D.. Fireside Theatre Book Club Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. B&W photos. 8vo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4"), beige cloth with scarlet lettering on spine, pictorial dust jacket (unclipped) with photo montage of scenes from the play, illustrated with a few B&W photographs from the production, archival mylar-protected, 116 pages. Jean Anouilh [pron.: An-ouil or A-nouil & not "anwi"] (1910 - 1987) was a prominent French playwrite and screenwriter whose work ranged from sophisticated drama to absurdist farce. He is well known for Antigone (1944)--based on Sophocles' drama--which attacked the Nazified Vichy government. One of France's most prolific and important dramatists, his themes often dealt with renouncing reality for dreams, and maintaining integrity in a world of moral compromise. A drama in three acts translated and adapted by Patricia Moyes (1923 - 2000), a British mystery writer. The premier in late 1957 at the Morosco Theatre starred Jean Strasberg as Amanda; Helen Hayes as the Duchess; Richard Burton as Prince Albert. VERY GOOD CONDITION: tight and clean Book Club Edition with very light uniform age-toning; in a bright dj (unclipped) with slight wear. Previous owner's name on front pastedown. Theatrical bookplate on front free endpaper.
