New York: Macmillan, 1884. Sixth edition. Hardcover. The hero, Tom Brown, is a star in the game established at Rugby School in the north of England, now known as rugby. Hughes is associated with the term "Muscular Christianity" which is thought to have been first used in a review of Charles Kingsley's novel Two Years Ago, in 1857. Small 8vo, b&w frontis, xx, 376 pp, ads (xii), 12, b&w illus throughout. Illustrations by Arthur Hughes and Sidney Prior Hall. Bright green cloth covers with gilt and black floral band at top of front cover and gilt title; gilt floral bands at top and base of spine, and gilt title at spine.
