About This Item

1942: Tony Sarg's Treasure Book, including Alice In Wonderland. Treasure Island. Rip Van Winkle. (See Whitton Paper Toys of the World, pp. 77-78). B.F. Jay & Company, 3" thick, 9 .5" wide, 11.5" high; 22 pp. of text and surprise parts, all intact and included.

Near FINE/MINT condition, museum-quality example of this 1942 play book/set. Never played with, complete, including original publisher's box (in lesser condition; see below). This First edition Treasure Book is in near mint condition with no missing pieces. See photos. Last documented sale of item in this condition was $950.

The net on the cover is intact with no damage of any kind. All the original pieces are there, including the treasure map, net bag of jewels, the invitation, the fish, the flag, the black spot, the apples. All movables work and are in perfect condition. We grade this at "Near Fine/Mint" because of gift inscription ("[to] Nancy Heim [from] Uncle Russ and Aunt Alice") in neat script (see photo). Some sources report fragments of rubber balloon face (no intact examples); our volume includes reflective board in that space that raises and lowers from top. Original box has worn and separated at some edges and has been professionally restored by reinforcing interior (only) edges of box. Interior Near Fine/Mint; box is fully presentable.

About the Author: "Anthony Frederick Sarg (1880–1942), known professionally as Tony Sarg, was a German American puppeteer and illustrator... In 1921, Sarg animated the film The First Circus [and] went on to produce a series of cartoons known as Tony Sarg's Almanac. In 1928, he designed, and his protégé Bil Baird built tethered helium-filled balloons up to 125 feet (40 m) long, resembling animals, for the New York institution of Macy's department store. These creations were featured in the store's Thanksgiving Day parade [and have been a fixture of the event since then].

The pinnacle of Sarg's visibility occurred at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, where his cumulative audience was 3 million.

Sarg pursued illustrating magazine covers, guide books, and original children's picture books, games, and toys. He designed salons and sophisticated interiors for high-end department stores and restaurants, including the supper club at New York's Waldorf Astoria. He designed extensively for the New York World's Fair, in 1939, creating the fair's official pictorial map. His protégé, Bil Baird, went on to design the puppets featured in the film The Sound of Music. The Academy Film Archive has preserved several of Tony Sarg's films, including The Original Movie, When the Whale Was Jonahed, Why They Love Cavemen, The First Earful, and Why Adam Walked the Floor."
