About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1953. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. 8" by 5.5". Not Stated. A first edition copy of the Alan Paton's powerful second novel, in the original dust wrapper. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Alan Stewart Paton (1903-1988) was a South African writer and anti-apartheid activist. This work was his second novel, considered to be one of his most successful and most powerful works. The story follows Afrikaner policeman Pieter van Vlaanderen and his tragic downfall. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition, though slightly faded to the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Dust wrapper is very smart, with just some sunning to the rear of the wrap. Fine
