About This Item

Harper & Brothers, 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 246 pages. A children's novel. Toyon, the dog, was adopted by Guran and his poor family in the harsh Siberian tundra whose fortunes seemed to turn with the presence of the brave hunting hound. 'Toyon's story was told by Guran to the author when as a young man he was sent to political exile in the polar region of Siberia and met the dog, then old and rheumatic and an object of veneration' -- from the rear flap. First edition (first printing). A bit of edge wear, else a very good copy in a dust jacket with creased and snagged covers and chipped at the spine ends, else very good. Inscribed by the author to the family of Paul Dotsenko, fellow Siberian refugees: 'with my friendly wishes and hope to see you all soon / Nicholas Kalashnikoff / Oct. 5, 1950 / New York.' Dotsenko is the author of the 1984 book The Struggle for a Democracy in Siberia, 1917-1920. A very nice association.
