First edition; two volumes; 340, 368pp. In contemporary full speckled calf (somewhat worn, front hinges cracked but secure), gilt volume numbers and remains of title labels to spines, early ink ownership inscription to half-title of volume 2, sporadic light paper browning but overall a very good complete copy of this uncommon history. Bookplate on verso of title page. Tight and clean. This is a first American edition of Stevenson's short story collection. Uncommon in original yellow wraps. This copy is from the estate of Rex Maughan (1936-2021), major Robert Louis Stevenson collector and archivist who, as Chairman of the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, greatly contributed to the preservation of Stevenson's estate in Valima, Samoa.

Good/As New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 194pp. Blind stamped boards, gilt stamped floral border, gilt stamping and gilt lettering to spine, all edges gilt, 7 engraved plates with tissue-guards, signed on editor's page "Maria G. Haro." Edge worn, spine chipped with minor loss, endpapers stained, very occasional foxing to text.

The first of five books in a series by the author "of sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters was based upon life in (the village of) Three Mile Cross" where she lived near Berkshire, England. Her Wikipedia biography describes "Her writing has all the charm of unaffected spontaneous humour, combined with quick wit and literary skill." Rubbed gray and brown marbled boards with leather corners and leather extended spine. Backstrip of spine is missing and has been replaced with paper strip with typed title which is peeling from front cover. Leather corners are worn and the embossed design on the leather cornes and spine is worn but still visable. Bumped corners. Marbling on outside pages. 292 surprisingly bright pages. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Ownership signature "Ric" and short note on the upper wrapper. Wrappers a little toned at the extremities, lightly rubbed, lower corner bumped, contents faintly toned. A very good copy. Offprint, presentation copy inscribed by the author on the upper wrapper, "Schrader, with kind regards of the author". Cell biologist Kristine Bonnevie (1872-1949) was Norway's first female professor and the first woman member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences. She studied with chromosome researcher Theodor Boveri in Germany, and was awarded a PhD in 1906 for her study of sex cells.
