First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., xvi, 492; viii, 447pp., lithographed frontispieces in both volumes, large folding map in vol. i, finely bound as an Eton College leaving present in contemporary polished calf gilt, covers ruled in gilt, spines richly gilt in compartments, morocco lettering pieces, a very good set.
Rare account of Johnston's expedition to the court of Shoa.

Johnston, a surgeon in the British navy, was 'a careful observer and incisive writer, his two volume travels, which include descriptions of the capital, Ankobar, and the market town of Aleyu Amba, are full of insights into traditional Ethiopian society' (Pankhurst).
