A Treatise on the Diseases of Children and Management of Infants from the Birth by Underwood, Michael - 1806

Boston: David West, 1806. Octavo. 2nd American Edition. Three volumes in one. xx, 476 pages. Underwood laid the foundation of modem pediatrics. His work was superior to anything that had previously appeared and remained the most important book on the subject for sixty years, passing through many editions. (Jeremy Norman's History of Medicine). What is a nice touch is this has two cards laid in, each which are admission tickets to hear lectures from the Medical Department of the University of Vermont in 1891. The medical student authorized to attend was George Saunders of Boston whose preceptor was Dr. W.J. Mosher. Each card is signed by J.H. Woodward, whose specialty was on disease of the eye and ear and head of Materia Medica and Therapeutics (see the thirty-ninth annual announcement of the Medical Department, 1892). Dr. Woodward passed away July 2, 1916 after his studies in Germany and Paris and head of the Bellvue Ophthalmology Department. Bound in full calf, flat spine ruled in gilt, red morocco spine label gilt. light damp stain to lower corners of a few leaves, one leaf with edges uncut and folded(binder's flaw). A very good copy.
