In modern morocco with raised bands and titling and embellishments in gilt on the spine. The binding is near fine. The textblock with significant predation limited to the margin of the final thirty leaves, never touching text or illustrations; title page with some loss to the top portion affecting 4 words of the title, now filled out with a very skillful facsimile; light toning throughout.
The first edition of this massively influential work by Downing, who U. P. Hendrick in his "History of Horticulture in America to 1860" calls the person who in the 19th century "most influenced American horticulture by his pen" p. 485. This is the first such work to focus entirely on landscape design and rural architecture in America. The book was revised and expanded with new editions coming out well into the 20th century. Uncommon in commerce. Hitchock 354; Sabin 20776.
