The first edition, second impression.In the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrapper.This volume contains two short works front Tolkien:'On Fairy-Stories' which was originally published in 1947 in 'Essays Presented to Charles Williams'. This work discusses the fairy-story as a literary form and was presented by Tolkien as the Andrew Lang lecture at the University of St Andrews. It explores Tolkien's own underlying philosophy of his fantastical writings. 'Leaf by Niggle', originally published in the 'Dublin Review', is a short story regarding an artist named Niggle, who lives in a society that does not value art. With the label of V. S. Staff to the front free endpaper, and the inscription 'Vera from Margaret with love', dated 1968, to the front free endpaper. With a lengthy inscription to the rear flyleaf of the dust wrapper, detailing an address in Kent, and the directions to get there.With four pages of advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. Shelf wear to back strip tail, with ink markings to tail of text block, and light spotting to front free endpaper. Inscription and former owner's label to front free endpaper. Dust wrapper lightly sunned to back strip, with two minor closed tears to back strip tail. Light marks to head of front wrap. Significant inscription to rear flyleaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

Tree and Leaf is a small book published in 1964, containing two works by J. R. R. Tolkien: a revised version of an essay called "On Fairy-Stories" (originally published in 1947 in Essays Presented to Charles Williams) an allegorical short story called "Leaf by Niggle" (originally published in the Dublin Review in 1945). The book was originally illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Mythopoeia was added to the 1988 edition.
