About This Item
Toronto: Macfadden Magazines of Canada, 1932. Magazine. Illus. by Dalton Stevens (cover illustration). Good. Magazine. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Vintage true crime magazine presenting the luridly sensationalist details of the dastardly deeds of various criminals, each one eventually proving that crime does not pay (although the hours are apparently pretty good). This issue features articles on Hawaii's Fortescu-Massie murder case (socialite Grace Fortescue and accomplices were charged with murdering Joseph Kahahawai, a prizefighter whom Fortescue's daughter, Thalia Massie, accused of being in a group of men who raped her); the second part of a series looking at "The Ape-Like Monster That Terrified Europe"; Catawissa, Missouri's Bertha Gifford, accused poisoner of at least 17 people, most of them children; Ruth Judd, dubbed the Arizona Trunk Murderess, who shot a couple of roommates, then hacked them to pieces and hid the bits in travel trunks; the first of three parts offering the story of Herbert Wilson, an erstwhile deacon with the First Baptist Church of San Diego, who became a safe-cracker and murderer; and many other stories. 120 pages, illustrated. Wonderful back cover you'd-never-get-away-with-this-today advertisement extolling the virtues of tobacco. Somewhat cocked, some edgewear, several vertical creases to front cover, dopey previous owner's small scribbling to forehead of woman in cover illustration, handling wear. Quite scarce in any condition,.
