The first edition thus of this devotional work on the Virgin Mary, originally written by Gautier de Coinci, here translated by Alice Kemp-Welch. The first edition thus of this work, being the first edition of this translation by Alice Kemp-Welch. A collection of praises on the Virgin Mary, containing 'Of a Knight to Whom Our Lady Appeared Whilst He Prayed', 'Of the Clerk and the Ring', 'Of the Drowning Man Delivered', and more. This work was one of the most popular pieces of Marianist literature from the period, presenting Christian values of the time. Originally written by Middle Medieval French by Gautier de Coinci. Translated by Alice Kemp-Welch. With a frontispiece, and six plates. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Ex Libris Monasterii S Mariae & S Petri de Prinknash'. Collated, complete. In the original paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Some light rubbing to the spine. Front hinge is starting after the frontispiece. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with only a couple of very light spots to the first and last few pages. Very Good
