Hardcover Condition:Fine. Slipcase Condition: VG. Limited Edition (1 of 25 lettered copies signed by Monroe Wheeler). Twelve Fables of Aesop narrated by Glenway Wescott, illustrated with 18 linoleum blocks by Antonio Frasconi, designed and printed in three colors (black, gray, and red) on Rives mould-made paper by Joseph Blumenthal at the Spiral Press, New York, from hand-set Emerson type and from the artist's original blocks. The edition is limited to 975 numbered copies and 25 lettered review copies, all signed by Mr. Frasconi, Mr. Wescott, and Mr. Blumenthal. This copy is one of the 25 lettered copies (copy number "F"). In addition to the other three signatures, it is signed by Monroe Wheeler.
In 1935 Wheeler was employed by New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). He was on the Library Committee and in three years he was Director of Membership and the following year Director of Publications. In 1940 MOMA created the role of Director of Exhibitions and Wheeler was the first person to hold the post. In 1944 he became one of MOMA's Trustees and later he sat on the Executive Committee, the Exhibitions Program Committee, and also the Coordination Committee. After the war in 1948, Wheeler was leading the Exhibitions and Publications, the outreach programs and the library. Hardcover is Fine. Previous owner's sophisticated bookplate on front pastedown.
Slipcase has edge wear to corners, and bottom edge of slipcase has a professional repair (about 1") at the fore-edge.
Also included is an extant Museum of Modern Art Order Form for the book. The Order Form includes a specimen page from the book - The Starved Farmer and His Fat Dogs. Additional shipping costs for international orders.
