Description:
Scarce. Likely one of just a few published copies of the British edition in existence. Hardcover Near Fine. No DJ. First edition of author's first book. Banned very shortly after publication. Suppressed in England on March 4, 1929. As a result, there is likely only a handful of copies remaining. In fact, the copy in the British Library is one of the 'French' copies published subsequent to the English copies. Sleeveless Errand was ruled obscene at the Bow Street Police Court. All but a few representative copies were ordered to be destroyed. The police had been tipped off about the content by the editor of the Morning Post after they had received a review copy. It was subsequently printed in Paris the same year by Jack Kahane's Obelisk Press. According to one publication, "Sleeveless Errand was probably the most suppressed novel ever published in England; every store containing copies was raided; and a guard stood for a week-end at the window of one store containing one copy, until the owner could be… Read More

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Slipcase. Very Good. First edition, second state with illustration entitled "Titian's Moses." From the library of Eugene Field. 631 pp. plus a 1-page publisher's advertisement at the rear. Rebound in full morocco and decorative endpapers with raised bands. Gilt top edge. Light rubbing to book's extremities. Custom/matching slipcase rubbed on the corners. Original brown cloth bound into the back of the book The book appears to be signed by Mark Twain on the title page and Eugene Field on a rear flyleaf. The signatures, though quite convincing, are likely forgeries made by the famed forger Eugene "Pinny" Field II (1879-1946) and Harry Dayton Sickles, working in tandem. Field's father, Eugene Field (1850-1895), was a newspaper columnist, poet, and book collector. After his death, Eugene Field's book collection passed on to his son. The younger Field developed the ability to imitate the autographs of the authors his father had collected as well as the signature of his… Read More
