Rare books from EGR books

Scarce. Likely one of just a few published copies of the British edition in existence. Hardcover Near Fine. No DJ. First edition of author's first book. Banned very shortly after publication. Suppressed in England on March 4, 1929. As a result, there is likely only a handful of copies remaining. In fact, the copy in the British Library is one of the 'French' copies published subsequent to the English copies. Sleeveless Errand was ruled obscene at the Bow Street Police Court. All but a few representative copies were ordered to be destroyed. The police had been tipped off about the content by the editor of the Morning Post after they had received a review copy. It was subsequently printed in Paris the same year by Jack Kahane's Obelisk Press. Twelve Fables of Aesop narrated by Glenway Wescott, illustrated with 18 linoleum blocks by Antonio Frasconi, designed and printed in three colors (black, gray, and red) on Rives mould-made paper by Joseph Blumenthal at the Spiral Press, New York, from hand-set Emerson type and from the artist's original blocks. The edition is limited to 975 numbered copies and 25 lettered review copies, all signed by Mr. Frasconi, Mr. Wescott, and Mr. Blumenthal. This copy is one of the 25 lettered copies (copy number "F"). In addition to the other three signatures, it is signed by Monroe Wheeler. In 1935 Wheeler was employed by New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). He was on the Library Committee and in three years he was Director of Membership and the following year Director of Publications. Frontispiece portrait and 39 plates by Hablot K. Browne (Phiz). Octavo. First issue points include "visiters" for "visitors" on p. 272, "flys" for "flies" on p. 245, "suprise" for "surprise" on p. 586 line 24, "incontestible" for "incontestable" p.297 line 22, "latter' has been corrected to "letter" on page 160 line 6 from the bottom, and "visiter" has been corrected to "sister" on line 17, page 123. Illustrations on pages 25, 38, and 44 do not say Chapman and Hall. Therefore, this is a mixed state.

Signed by Spencer Trask. Vellum paper. Velvet end papers. Locking clasp. Written by Katrina Trask after two of her children died tragically, 3 days apart - Spencer, Jr., age 5 and Christina, age 11. In 1888, Katrina Trask suffered from diphtheria. A doctor allowed Christina and Spencer Jr. to visit her. Both contracted the infectious disease and died within two days of each other, but Katrina Trask recovered. A year later, the final Trask child died three days after birth. The signatures, though quite convincing, are likely forgeries made by the famed forger Eugene "Pinny" Field II (1879-1946) and Harry Dayton Sickles, working in tandem. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine/Fine. The Poets of Great Britain Complete from Chaucer to Churchill, 109 volumes. Believed to be the second (2nd) edition. Engraved additional pictorial title in each volume, 48 engraved portraits, contemporary tree calf gilt, roll-tool borders to sides, flat spines in six compartments, marbled endpapers, and green and red morocco lettering and number labels. Interior pages are clean with very little foxing. Volumes are in Fine condition with little wear with one exception. The original volume 95 is missing and has been replaced by volume 95 from the 1807 reprint edition published by Cadell, Davies and Samuel Bagster. The front board of this replacement volume is detached. Edinburgh, at the Apollo Press, [for John Bell], [1778-1784]. A beautiful set comprising the work of approximately 50 poets.
