Moderate toning, light soiling, horizontal and vertical fold lines, small holes along main horizontal fold line just touching a letter of text. $750. * This document, a clerical copy, outlines an agreement by Samuel Brewer Jr. to pay David Perkins[?] $25.24 and additional legal costs of $7.62. George Hairston [1750-1825], the prominent Virginia planter, politician and Revolutionary War officer, served as the guarantor. A few contemporary markings to the title leaves, and some scattered foxing, else clean, sound, attractive copies of both volumes. An elusive first edition of this novel about Gothic Spain, authored by this early American novelist, who Merle Johnson considered to be the southern equivalent of James Fenimore Cooper (see Johnson, p. 322).
