About This Item

China: Unknown. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1920. Presumed First Edition. Hardcover. No Date, but this is an early 20th Century Chinese book (c. 1900/1920) with 12 lovely hand-painted illustrations. The book has a 'fold-out accordion binding' which when folded out to the full extent, cover to cover, measures approx. 3.5 metres (11' 5" or 350 cms) with a wooden cover front and back. Some marks to the rear plain cover and a small sliver of the corner missing - negligible. A Chinese "Foo" (Fu) character is carved into front board and attractively infilled with a green chalky substance. This cover design is The "Foo" (Fu) character = Happiness. A little of this 'infill' has been rubbed off. "A classic Confucian treatise depicting various exemplary stories of Confucian morals, first written by Guo Jujing during the Yuan dynasty (1260-1368)." . The Left Hand side pages consist of 12 beautiful bright, full colour, hand-painted pictures on silk. Opposite the illustrations on the right hand side are descriptions of the activities in both English and Chinese. Paper uniformly browning throughout. Text printed in both Chinese and English on the rectos only, opposite hand-coloured, wood-block illustrations pasted on the verso. No publisher noted, but evidently part of a series produced circa 1900/20s - possibly earlier or possibly later? . Text in English & Chinese. The top and bottom edges of the pages are bordered with metallic paper (possibly tarnished gilt? ). Overall a lovely period peice with delightful Chinese Artwork - presumably originally produced as Souvenirs for Foreign Visitors? At the time of listing I also have another book in this series for sale - 'The Story of Rice'. See Images. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
