About This Item
A pair of stylized and detailed ensembles: an 18th century fantasy gown and hair style, signed in full, ca 1915; a winter outfit with fur trimmed jacket and long decorative skirt, ca 1911. The fantasy costume drawing measures 10 3/8 x 8 7/8 inches. Condition: two marginal tears not affecting drawing and light foxing near the breaks. Tipped onto a mat and framed. Frame measures 15 x 17 inches. The winter outfit is drawn on cream toned art paper and is lighter than shown in the accompanying image. The drawing measures 11 x 8.5, and the frame measures 12 x 16 inches. Barbier, considered one of the great illustrators of the early 20th century, led a group of artists from the Beaux Arts School known for their flamboyance as much as their art. Barbier designed jewelry, glass and wallpapers in addition to his costume and set designed for theater, ballet and the Follies Bergére. His stylized design has become iconic. Autograph

About Schulson Autographs
Fine and rare manuscript material and artworks have been offered by our company for forty years. Written descriptions accompany each piece, and we stand behind our items in perpetuity. Schulson Autographs is the continuation of David Schulson Autographs. Filled with art and history, Scrawl: An A-Z of Famous Doodles (Rizzoli 2019) is our coffee table book based on our family collection of illustrations in letters, written by Claudia, Caren and Todd Strauss-Schulson. Artworks from Scrawl were exhibited at the Grolier Club, Jan. through Feb, 2019, "Art in the Letter and Other Scrawls."
