In a good dustwrapper the spine of which is a little darkened, which has two small chips at the top of the spine and which has been sellotaped along the edges by a previous owner. The wrapper, which is not price-clipped, is now protected in a clear removable sleeve. Bookplate on front fixed end-paper. Inscribed by the author on the half-title as follows: " J.A. Spencer from H.E. Bates. September 1930." 320 pages. The author's first novel. Photographs available on request.

Original maroon cloth with gilt spine lettering, slight spine end bumping, pages very clean, a few tiny fox spots to the blocks, slight offset strips on endpapers from the flaps of the scarce dustjacket, which is not price-clipped, the tiniest of corner wear and spine-top crease, and very slightly edge-browned. Signed by the author on the half-title page. His second book and first novel, in nice condition, very scarce, unique thus at present.
