About This Item
Washington, D.C: Smithsonian, 1993. Paperback. Near Fine. Illustrated with color and black and white photographs. Paperback. Pictorial cover. From Library Journal, "Ukiyo-E, or "pictures of the floating world," is the name given to images produced during the Edo period (1600-1868) that showed life in the pleasure quarters of Japanese cities. Common subjects include courtesans, actors, demons, and erotic scenes. In the West, Ukiyo-E woodblock prints are better known than the paintings, which have begun to be studied and published only recently. The significant holdings of paintings in the British Museum are presented in this volume, which opens with a brief introductory essay to set the historical context of the work. Notes on the reproductions include biographical sketches of the artists, questions of attribution and authenticity, and other issues of connoisseurship in this relatively undeveloped area of study. Recommended for Asian arts collections and all large fine arts collections." Contains 223 color and 224 black and white illustrations. 256pp

CONDITION: Covers have very light rubbing. Pages are crisp and clean. Full refund if not satisfied.
