Buenos Aires: Editorial Santiago Ruedas, 1945. First Spanish Language Trade Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 833 pages. In Good condition, lacking extremely scarce dust jacket. Bound in publisher's brown cloth with black label and gilt lettering to spine. Some shelfwear and rubbing. Boards and text-block slightly bowed. Small tear and hole in rear hinge. A well read copy. JS consignment. Shelved in case 2. First trade edition in the Spanish language, first Argentine, and the first South American edition. One of 2528 copies, 28 being lettered, 300 numbered, and the remaining 2200 being the trade edition. First published in English in 1922, this translation of the most famous of the modernist novels took six years to complete. Argentinian Jorge Luis Borges, who had himself translated small portions of Ulysses in the 1920s, wrote that "An exact rendering of Ulysses strikes me as something impossible to achieve." 1368344.
