Slightly smaller book, maroon cloth, quotation from Captain John Parker at Battle of Lexington on title page, on reverse a quotation from Frederick Douglass, dedicated to men who died in first and last battle of Spanish Civil War. 383 browned pages. DJ beneath mylar has dark red background with illustration of Capitol Building and guerilla fighter on front, sketch of Bessie on back by Hugo Gilbert. DJ has slight surface wear to front tips, tiny nick at top front edge nearer spine, very slight wear at 1/4" of bottom front edge nearer spine, tiny tear and slight wear at spine top left and right edge, very slight wear at spine bottom left and right edge, microtear and micronick with crease at top back edge, tiny light brown stain at bottom back right. Good+ DJ/Fine+ book.

Scarce novel by radical American author who was blacklisted among the Hollywood Ten during the McCarthy era, Pages lightly toned as usual (publisher used cheaper stock, so its is almost impossible to find a pristine copy). Otherwise a bright, clean, unmarked copy.

He was, famously, one of the blacklisted Hollywood Ten, whose careers were ruined in McCarthy's witch-hunt. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Red cloth binding with black lettering on the spine. Clean text; 383 pages, heavily tanned (although the binding was attractive, a poor quality paper stock was used). Shelf-rubbed at the bottoms of the boards. The dustjacket is complete, but has been price-clipped. Rubbed and creased along the edges. The rear panel features a portrait of Bessie. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good.
