About This Item

London: Chatto and Windus, 1962. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5.5". None. The first edition of Iris Murdoch's sixth novel, 'An Unofficial Rose'. Thematically, this work is dominated by Romantic love. Each of the main characters are in love with at least one of the others. Freedom is another important theme to this work.Critically, the work was seen as a tragi-comedy about the follies, miseries and ambiguities of love. First edition, held in original unclipped dustwrapper. Iris Murdoch was a popular twentieth century novelist and philosopher. Her novels primarily touch on themes of good and evil, sexual relationships, morality and the power of the unconscious. A prominent philosopher, she is now increasingly accredited for her work in the field of philosophy, most notably her work on the reinterpretation of Aristotle and Plato, as well as her discussions of moral philosophy. In her lifetime Murdoch wrote 26 novels, as well of a series of short stories and several philosophical papers. In the original full cloth binding and held in original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, very smart with bumping to the head and tail of spine. Discolouration to the tail of spine possibly due to water damage. Light rubbing to the extremities. Dustwrapper is generally smart. Sunning to the spine internally and externally. Small tidemarks to the tail of spine, affecting a small area of the front and rear wraps. A few small tide marks to the spine. The odd spot to the wraps. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

The nine characters in this novel are all looking for love; and so closely is the web woven that the actions and passions of each are constantly affecting the others. The irony and pathos of this tangled situation has extended Iris Murdoch's powers to the full, but her mastery of it is complete. Impelled by affection, lust, lost scruple, illusion and disillusion, wanting to be free yet needing to be involved, these characters perform the linked figures of their destiny.
