The US armed forces used dozens of vehicle types for a great variety of purposes during World War Two. This book - acclaimed in France and now available in English language - provides the military vehicle enthusiast with a fascinating study, not only of these tactical and support vehicles, but of the mechanization of the US armed forces also. This is much more than a reference book. It goes straight to the nub of the subject and describes each vehicle where it naturally belongs - according to use; a far more coherent approach than division by classic class. The authors put the vehicles in perspective by describing how the US military swiftly became the most highly mechanized in the world; how the needs of each branch of service differed, and how US industry was reorganized to make the thousands of vehicles - from the rugged GMC and Mack trucks through the awesome Dragon Wagon and amphibious DUKW to the ageless Jeep - that were needed. This is also a very wide ranging book. Not only does it cover fully the vehicles operated by the US Army, but also those used by the US Navy, Marines and Air Forces and the thousands supplied to America's Allies, plus their extensive use postwar, notably in French Indochina. Supporting a fact-filled text are detailed technical tables, comprehensive data charts giving chassis/body, manufacturer, users, designations, serials and tactical markings, and well over 500 photographs illustrating all the vehicles and their diverse uses. The authors are well known to military vehicle enthusiasts. They have several books and articles to their credit, including another Foulis book The GMC: A Universal Truck.. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
