Boston: James French / Printed at Coolidge's Steam Power Printing Establishment, 1847. Hardcover. Fair. Third Edition (1847). Publisher's brown boards stamped with gilt on spine, blind stamped boards. Corners exposed; spine ends worn. Previous owner's inscriptions on front paste down (dated 1853 & 1868). Heavy soiling to some of the pages. The poem at the top of Chapter XIV has been torn out (replacement text for both sides of this leaf is laid in). Five illustrated plates, including frontispiece (each is hand watercolored by a previous owner). 233 pp. 6.25 x 3.75 inches. Mrs. J. Thayer states in the preface that this novel was written with the intention of cultivating in young hearts the beauty of an unselfish, amiable character and a loving spirit, to impel children to endear their mothers with love and to lift their hearts higher, to love the whole human race and God, and incite them to good actions.
