About This Item

Tulsa, Penumbra Projects, 1975 . First edition, signed and dated 5/5/03 on the front free endpaper; 4to (285 x 273 mm, 11¼ x 10¾ in); black-and-white and colour photographs, reproductions of Herron's paintings, montages, and ephemeral items printed in offset, Herron and Daniel Mayo's signatures in facsimile, toning to pages; illustrated adhesive-bound wrappers, hinges starting as often, crease to bottom tip, small area of laminate pulled on front top edge, a very good copy; [132]pp.
Gaylord Oscar Herron signed this copy on the front endpaper; the facsimile signatures on the title-page and below Daniel Mayo's portrait are often misdescribed as original. He begins Vagabond by quoting from Genesis and discussing the story of Cain, to whom, along with artist Bill Rabon, he dedicates the book. The photographs offer a disquieting glimpse of the life of someone sitting on the margins in Tulsa; 'America's most all-American city... the buckle in the bible-belt.' Vagabond is a semi-autobiographical work in which Herron attempts to come to terms with his relationship to, and place within, 'a generation poised on the threshold of losing the mark of Cain'.

Gerry Badger suggests that Vagabond is 'an ebullient and exuberant prototype for the new photographic eclecticism of such figures as Roe Ethridge or Christian Patterson' (The Photobook).
