Venetian Life, Leipzig: Bernard Tauchnitz, 1883.16mo (6-7inches high), reprint of the 1867 second edition, pp. 391, vellum boards with gilt lettering and vine decoration to spine, frames with vine pattern on covers, all edges tinted red, 22 albumen prints bound in, Howells' signature tipped in at the free front endpaper, attached either by a prior owner or, more likely, an auction house. In the days before there were postcards, Tauchnitz, a reprint house, created editions like this one targeting wealthy English-speaking tourists, offering photos of tourist attractions bound into classy volumes of the works of well-known authors. The present book is all that, at a pocket size convenient to the traveler. Not in BAL.Condition of this book:Bright and clean. Vellum has some small discolorations but overall remains attractive, photos sharp but show minor silvering, especially at the edges. First Illustrated Edition, or first by this illustrator and in this format. Size: 16mo (very small). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting.
