About This Item
Canberra, Mawson: Self-Published: D. A. Spalding, 1989. Facsimile ed.. Hardback octavo, no jacket as issued, very good condition, maroon cloth boards (gilt lettering front cover & spine), map, light foxing top edge, minimal edgewear. 39 pp. The book is a first-hand account of a country tour in 1899 by the Queensland Governor, Lord Lamington, and his state government minister for railways and public works, John Murray. The book is written by 'J. G', who is thought to be Mr J. Gilligan, who went on the tour and wrote several articles about it for 'The Brisbane Courier'. Dr. David Spalding, rescued the original work, and this is a facsimile reprint of the original with an introductory essay and a map to help anyone not familiar with the area. Gayndah was one of the earliest declared towns (1867) in Queensland. (No 165 of limited edition of 200 autographed copies. A facsimile with 38 leaves printed on one side only. Loosely inserted: A one-page description of the book and the history of Dr Spalding and his efforts to get the book reprinted as a facsimile. ).
