About This Item
Vich, Spain: En la Imprenta de Felipe Tolosa, [1818].. 35pp. plus folding table. Recent half vellum and marbled boards. Wear to extremities, light tidelines (not affecting text), mild foxing and tanning. Very good. Untrimmed. Uncommon work detailing the violent end of the Capuchin Franciscan mission in Spanish Guiana (now the Guayana region in eastern Venezuela). In early 1817 during the war for Venezuelan independence, Simón Bolívar entered Guayana, one the main centers of royalist opposition to the first Venezuelan republic. The Capuchins were sympathetic to the royalists and played an important role in encouraging the indigenous people of the mission to fight for Spain against the revolutionaries. In attacks between February and June of 1817, revolutionary troops killed a total of thirty Capuchin friars. Fray Nicolas de Vich was one of the few priests who managed to escape and tell his story in this funeral oration he preached in Spain celebrating the lives of his brothers. The folding table shows the extent of these missions before their erasure. We only located eleven copies in U.S. libraries in OCLC. PALAU 362676. OCLC 4113866.
