Andre Alice Norton was a ground breaking writer of science fiction, speculative fiction, crime fiction, romance and fantasy. When she approached a publisher with "Ordeal in Other Where," she was told that women didn't read science fiction and men didn't read books with female protagonists. The feedback didn't deter her. After her first publication, she never stopped writing. Norton spent nearly 7 decades writing in a dozen genres. Called "The Grande Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy" she left behind a legacy of over 300 titles.
Norton was the first woman to win The Gandalf Awards (1977), a lifetime achievement award for renowned fantasy writers. Later winners would include Ursula K. LeGuin (1979) and Ray Bradbury (1980). She was also the first woman to be inducted in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1997, alongside Arthur C. Clarke, H.G. Wells and Issac Asimov. She worked as a reader for Gnome Press and ran a small book store called "Mystery House." It is a truth universally acknowledged that Andre Norton loved cats.
