About This Item

1791 PROVENANCE 1ed Marshal Richelieu SIGNED Seven Years War Austrian Succession

Louis Vignerot du Plessis was an 18th-century French diplomat, better-known for serving as the 3rd Duke of Richelieu. After serving the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War, Richelieu became the Marshal of France under Louis XIV. An extensive biography of his life was published in 1791 by Louis Faur. However, more than describing his political and military careers, Faur's "Vie privée du maréchal de Richelieu" describes Richelieu's private life, more specifically his relationships with women. It contains many original letters and private memoirs providing great insight to the life of Richelieu outside of his public life.

This first edition, three-volume set includes a handwritten letter signed by Louis François Armand de Vignerot du Plessis, 3rd Duke of Richelieu! Additionally, the set was later owned by the esteemed physicist and Nobel Prize winner, Louis Victor Pierre Raymond, 7th Duc de Broglie!

· Collation: Complete with all pages; 3 volumes

o Vol. I – [4], 474

o Vol. II – [4], 488

o Vol. III – [4], 441, [1]

· Provenance:

o Armorial Bookplate – Pce. A. de Broglie

Coat of arms for the House of Broglie. All junior members of the House of Broglie bear the title of prince de Broglie, while the head of the family is the duc de Broglie. This example likely belonged to Louis Victor Pierre Raymond, 7th Duc de Broglie (1892-1987), who was a French physicist and aristocrat who made groundbreaking contributions to quantum theory. In his 1924 PhD thesis, he postulated the wave nature of electrons and suggested that all matter has wave properties. This concept is known as the de Broglie hypothesis, an example of wave–particle duality, and forms a central part of the theory of quantum mechanics. De Broglie won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1929, after the wave-like behavior of matter was first experimentally demonstrated in 1927. De Broglie became the first high-level scientist to call for establishment of a multi-national laboratory, a proposal that led to the establishment of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

o Ephemera – Handwritten Letter; Approved and signed by Louis François Armand de Vignerot du Plessis, 3rd Duke of Richelieu

A request for payment of 6,000 livres from the army treasurer for expenses incurred during the Seven Years War and the invasion of Hanover, dated January 1, 1758. Approved and signed by Richelieu.

Richelieu led the military campaign into Hanover, a post that was only partially successful and surrounded him with accusations of corruption; he and his officers were suspected of having stolen three-quarters of the money he was supposed to raise in taxes from the occupied territories, as well as stealing the pay of his soldiers. Early in the new year he suddenly resigned his command and retired to France, handing over command to the Comte d'Clermont.
