The very scarce first edition of this guide to the maintenance of the villa garden from Scottish garden and hothouse designer, Walter Nicol.Nicol discusses soils, walls, trees, shrubs and garden formation, with the latter portion of the work arranged by month, with Nicol providing an account of what maintenance and planting should be undertaken in each month of the year. Nicol was employed at a number of estates in Scotland and improved the design and layout of many gardens and glasshouses. He was in particular responsible for the walled garden layout at Dalhousie Castle in Midlothian.With the armorial bookplate of British army officer and Captain of the Royal Company of Archers, Brigadier-General Sir Robert Gordon Gilmour, to the front pastedown. Six pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.The very scarce first edition of this early nineteenth century guide to the garden, from prominent garden designer Walter Nicol. In a quarter calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Marks and light fading to back strips, with rubbing to boards. Joints starting, with boards holding firm. Internally, firmly bound.
