Nicol was employed at a number of estates in Scotland and improved the design and layout of many gardens and glasshouses. He was in particular responsible for the walled garden layout at Dalhousie Castle in Midlothian.With the armorial bookplate of British army officer and Captain of the Royal Company of Archers, Brigadier-General Sir Robert Gordon Gilmour, to the front pastedown.
