About This Item
New York, NY: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1963. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This skillfully written biography presents for family reading the life story of Vinnie Ream Hoxie, who at nineteen began her sculpture of the statue of Lincoln which now stands in the Rotunda of the Capitol in Washington, D. C. Born in 1847 Vinnie was one of the most colourful of this era in American History. As a young and untried artist she won the unusual privilege of being allowed to model Lincoln's head while he worked at his White house desk. She pioneered in a field open to few women and triumphed! She was commissioned to do many statues including one of the nation's heroes, Admiral David Farragut. She enjoyed as well a lively social life that resulted in her marriage to handsome Lieutenant Richard Hoxie. In this vivid portrait Gordon Langley Hall has not only captured the gentle spirit of a remarkable woman but the full flavor of a significant and memorable time. 149 pages. Top & bottom of spine slightly bumped. Dust jacket top of spine has heavy rubbing, the bottom has slight rubbing, and the front cover two outside corners have some rubbing, the bottom outside corner has a 1/2" closed tear and just to the left a 1/4" closed tear on the bottom edge..
