The fifth published novel of Patrick White is about a strange, tortured man named Voss who, in 1850, leads an ill-assorted expedition across the Australian desert. The book is based upon the life of the nineteenth-century Prussian explorer and naturalist Ludwig Leichhardt, who disappeared while on an expedition into the Australian outback. Readers of this book will learn much about the Australian outback as well as why the author won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
