About This Item
Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1878. First Edition. Cloth. Near fine. From the library of Henri, Count of Chambord, The Voyage of the Paper Canoe by Nathaniel H. Bishop.. Octavo, xv, [1], 351pp, [1], 16pp ads. Maroon pebbled cloth, title in gilt on spine. Complete with 10 full-page maps, frontispiece and 13 illustrations. Clean text throughout, solid text block. Label on verso of front free endpaper from Maggs Bros. Ltd., noting that this book is from the library of Comte de Chambord (Henri V of France, Duke of Bordeaux). Henri, Count of Chambord and Duke of Bordeaux (1820-1883) was the disputed King of France from August 2-9, 1830, following the abdication of his grandfather, Charles X, in response to the July Revolution. Henri was never actually proclaimed king as the National Assembly declared that the crown should pass to his cousin, Louis Philippe d'Orleans, becoming Louis Philippe I, the penultimate monarch of France. Henri lived out his days in exile, while retaining a few supporters who believed him to be the true monarch.
